Go Fund Yourself

A GoFundMe campaign is taking the internet by storm to raise money to build the wall.

⠀⠀⠀⠀In case you were unaware, Brian Kolfage has become an internet sensation. For better or worse, he founded a GoFundMe campaign in order to crowdfund the necessary $1 billion to build the 2,000-mile wall along the border of Mexico.⠀⠀⠀⠀GoFundMe and other crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter have become popular avenues for publicly funded initiatives. Believe it or not, people will give their hard-earned money to causes they believe in. Crowdfunding allows for streamlined access to likeminded demographics. Whatever your cause, someone out there is waiting to throw money at it.⠀⠀⠀⠀In less than three weeks, Brian’s “We The People Will Fund The Wall” project has garnered over $18 million.⠀⠀⠀⠀The crowdfunded campaign was a reaction to President Trump’s threat to shut down the government if Congress refused to fund the construction of the wall. United States Airforce Veteran, Brian Kolfage, decided to take matters into his own hands by sourcing the funds publicly.⠀⠀⠀⠀What would be a very different scenario than the platform President Trump ran on in 2016 when he claimed, “Mexico will pay for the wall.” Now, under the threat of shutting down the government, the people of America are taking the controversial issue into their own hands.⠀⠀⠀⠀Individual contributions by anonymous donors run up to $50,000 and continue rolling in by the truck full. What these donors may not be aware of is that if the lofty goal of $1 billion is not met, legally, the money is Brian’s. Though, he claims that all proceeds will be refunded if the initiative fails.⠀⠀⠀⠀Brian Kolfage is a United States war veteran and Purple Heart recipient. After being severely wounded in war and becoming a triple amputee, he took on motivational speaking. Currently, he is actively pursuing the motivation of a nation to secure its borders.⠀⠀⠀⠀National security and illegal immigration are hot-button issues that evoke heated debate from both sides. The topic has garnered national attention and has remained a topic of interest in every single election I can remember, jarring intense emotional reactions. And that kind of emotional reaction is precisely what makes for a successful GoFundMe campaign.⠀⠀⠀⠀While remaining a highly controversial and morally obscure issue, one thing is certain. Crowdsourcing enables people to use collected efforts to accomplish nearly anything. Self-propagated funding allows for a new age of public subsidization. Just make sure the campaign ruffles feathers and raises hairs.⠀⠀⠀⠀With the wealth of a worldwide demographic, people can crowdfund businesses off the ground, fight cancer, and now, take national government issues into their own hands.
